A teenager was arrested after he allegedly burglarized a vehicle and then led police on a high-speed pursuit in a stolen car in Johnsburg before he was taken into custody Sunday afternoon.
Lincoln L. Gillam, 18, of Itasca, was charged with burglary, two counts of aggravated fleeing to elude enhanced and aggravated unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle.
A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges Gillam committed burglary around 1:42 p.m. Sunday in the 1100 block of Quincy Avenue in Johnsburg.
Gillam entered a gray Dodge SUV that was parked at a residence and stole items from the vehicle, the complaint said.
The complaint said Gillam stole a red leather Michael Kors glasses case and prescription glasses, as well as a purse, which contained a woman’s Illinois identification card, cash and other miscellaneous items.
A Johnsburg police officer spotted Gillam, who was driving a stolen 2024 GMC Terrain, court documents said.
A traffic stop was attempted with lights and sirens but Gillam refused and increased his speed to elude the officer, the complaint said.
The complaint said Gillam failed to stop at the stop sign at Bay Road and Weingart Road.
Gillam also disregarded a second traffic control device when he turned left to go southbound onto Chapel Hill Road against the red light at Bay Road, the complaint said.
Gillam is accused of driving at least 21 mph over the posted speed limit during the chase.
Gillam was eventually arrested and transported to the McHenry County Jail.
The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain Gillam pending trial, arguing he poses a willful flight risk.
McHenry County Judge Christopher Hansen denied the petition and released Gillam following an Initial Court Appearance on Monday.
Hansen placed Gillam on pre-trial supervision with electronic home monitoring and a curfew to be inside his home from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. every day.
Gillam was also ordered not to operate a vehicle with the exception of going to and from work and as long as he has a valid driver’s license.
Gillam is scheduled to appear in court again on January 14 for a status of preliminary hearing.
