An Algonquin man in his 30s was seriously injured after the sheriff says he caused a head-on crash in Walworth County that left an elderly woman dead Tuesday evening.
The Walworth County, Wisconsin, Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a 911 call around 6:20 p.m. Tuesday regarding a vehicle crash with injuries on County Road A east of McCabe Road in Sugar Creek, Wisconsin.
Sheriff’s deputies and the Whitewater Fire and EMS Department arrived to find two vehicles involved in a head-on crash, sheriff’s officials said.
Three victims had been injured and they were treated by paramedics and transported to the hospital.
A preliminary investigation showed that a vehicle, driven by a 30-year-old Algonquin man, was traveling westbound on County Road A.
The Algonquin man’s vehicle crossed the centerline and struck another vehicle that was traveling eastbound, sheriff’s officials said.
The vehicle traveling eastbound was occupied by a 68-year-old Lyons, Wisconsin, woman who was the driver and a 74-year-old Elkhorn, Wisconsin, woman who was a passenger.
Whitewater Fire and EMS Chief Kelly Freeman said the 30-year-old man had self-extricated from the car but the two women in the other vehicle were trapped inside and required extrication.
The 30-year-old man and the 68-year-old woman were both seriously injured and required transport to a trauma center.
Freeman said Flight For Life and UW Health Med Flight helicopters were dispatched to the scene.
One landed at Millard Community Church and the other landed on North Lake Drive.
The 74-year-old passenger was transported to a hospital by ambulance.
Sheriff’s officials said the 68-year-old woman involved was pronounced dead at a Rockford hospital at 9:24 p.m. Tuesday by the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office. Her identity has not been released yet.
County Road A was shut down in both directions during the investigation with assistance from the Walworth County Department of Public Works.
The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office said it is continuing to investigate the cause and circumstances of the crash.
