A woman was left injured and trapped after police say she ran a red light with a child in her car, causing a three-vehicle crash that left her car rolled over, in Riverwoods.

The Riverwoods Police Department and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District responded around 4:30 p.m. Monday to the area of Lake Cook Road and Saunders Road for a vehicle crash with injuries.

Riverwoods Police Chief Bruce Dayno said a vehicle was traveling northbound on Saunders Road and entered the intersection at Lake Cook Road against a red light.

The car, a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox, was being driven by a 34-year-old Salem, Wisconsin, woman, according to Riverwoods Police Commander George Pfutzenreuter. She had a child passenger in the vehicle.

Pfutzenreuter said the Chevrolet was struck by a westbound 2014 Jeep Wrangler, which was driven by a 23-year-old Waukegan man, causing it to overturn.

The Chevrolet slid into a third vehicle, which was stopped southbound on Saunders Road at the light.

The 34-year-old woman in the Chevrolet was reportedly trapped inside the car and had to be extricated by the fire department.

Her child passenger, whose exact age was not known, was reportedly removed from the car before the fire department arrived.

Both the woman and the child were transported by ambulance to Endeavor Health Highland Park Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Dayno said.

The driver of the Jeep did not require transport to the hospital and refused medical treatment at the scene.

Heavy traffic delays were reported at the busy intersection due to the crash.

The 34-year-old woman driving the Chevrolet was cited with disobeying a traffic control device.
