Police say a woman in her 20s was left hospitalized after shots were fired and she was found shot in the throat at an apartment building in Zion Sunday afternoon.

The Zion Police Department responded around 2:09 p.m. to the 1700 block of Joanna Avenue in Zion for a report of shots fired.

Zion Police Department Lt. Paul Kehrli said a subsequent 911 call after the shots fired reports indicated someone had been shot.

Officers arrived to find a 28-year-old woman who had been suffering from a gunshot wound to her throat.

The woman was conscious and still able to speak at the scene, Kehrli said. She was found inside an apartment building.

She told officers initially that she did not know who shot her and was not able to provide any description at all of the gunman.

Kehrli said paramedics transported her to Advocate Condell Medical Center with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

She remains hospitalized as of Monday and was stable.

The woman declined to speak with investigators after her initial encounter with officers, Kehrli said.

Officers found another person at the scene, who they believe had something to do with the incident, but their exact involvement is not known.

Detectives responded to investigate and also talked with the victim again on Monday but she continued to not provide details on the shooting.

Kehrli said it is still unclear what exactly happened and the investigation remains open and active.

Anyone with information to aid in the investigation is urged to call the Zion Police Department at 847-872-8000 or Lake County Crime Stoppers at 847-662-2222.
