The weather service says a “powerful storm system” could bring a variety of hazardous weather to the Chicagoland area on Sunday into Monday, including thunderstorms and snow showers.
The National Weather Service (NWS) on Saturday issued a hazardous weather outlook for Lake, McHenry, Winnebago, Kane, Cook, Will, DuPage, Boone, Ogle, Lee, DeKalb, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, Kankakee, Livingston, Iroquois and Ford counties.
The NWS said a powerful storm system will bring a variety of hazardous weather conditions to the region Sunday into Monday.
The outlook said areas of fog, some of which could become dense, are expected to develop Saturday evening, particularly near and north of I-80 outside of Chicago.
Showers with a few embedded thunderstorms are expected on Sunday, some of which could produce damaging winds along with a low chance for a brief tornado, mainly south of Interstate 80.
Some of the storms could produce locally heavy rainfall starting Sunday morning, the NWS said.
Strong showers and possible storms could produce strong to locally damaging winds late Sunday.
Widespread rainfall amounts of 0.25 to 0.75 inches are possible with localized corridors of 1-1.5 inches.
Very strong winds, with gusts up to 50 mph, and crashing temperatures are expected Sunday evening into Monday, the NWS said.
Temperatures will fall into the teens or 20s by Monday morning with wind chills of near zero.
Gusty snow showers may also develop Sunday night through Monday and lead to localized low visibility and slick spots.
