Police have charged a driver with being intoxicated after an SUV crashed into a house, sending two to the hospital, causing significant damage and leaving residents homeless in Johnsburg.
The McHenry Township Fire Protection District and Johnsburg Police Department responded around 8:19 a.m. Thursday to the 2500 block of West Johnsburg Road in Johnsburg for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
McHenry Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief David Harwood said a 911 caller reported that a vehicle had crashed into a house.
Emergency crews arrived on the scene within four minutes and confirmed that a gray Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by Bryan P. Clark, 43, of Bull Valley, had crashed into a single-family residence.
The home is located on the south side of Johnsburg Road at the intersection with Spring Grove Road.
Harwood said the vehicle appeared to be traveling southbound on Spring Grove Road and continued through the intersection directly into the home.
Firefighters checked the Chevrolet and also inside the residence for anyone who was injured.
Clark was inside the Chevrolet and injured. He was taken to an awaiting ambulance for transport to the hospital, Harwood said.
Seven people were located inside the house, Harwood said. One of the adult occupants was injured and taken to a second awaiting ambulance.
Both victims were transported to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry with minor, non-life-threatening injuries.
The rest of the occupants in the house were uninjured and did not require treatment by paramedics.
The Village of Johnsburg Building Department was notified and responded to the scene to evaluate the structure, Harwood said.
The residence sustained significant damage and was deemed to be uninhabitable.
Harwood said the American Red Cross was requested and is assisting the residents with alternative housing.
Johnsburg Road was shut down in both directions for approximately 20 minutes.
Police said Clark was charged with driving under the influence, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and improper transportation of alcohol or liquor by a driver.
He has been released from custody with a notice to appear at a future court date.
