Gurnee firefighters rescued two cats and quickly extinguished a fire in a basement before it could further spread within a home in Gages Lake Sunday evening.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Gurnee Fire Department and Grayslake Fire Protection District responded around 10:40 p.m. Sunday to the 33900 block of North Shawnee Avenue in Gages Lake for a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived and found a fire in the basement of a home.

Four residents were able to safely evacuate the house prior to the fire department’s arrival, Gurnee Battalion Fire Chief Nick Perry said at the scene.

Firefighters pulled a hose line and entered the home.

Crews rescued two cats in the basement from a back window, Perry said.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and prevented it from spreading to the rest of the house.

A fire hydrant nearby was used to establish a positive water supply for firefighters.

Crews remained on the scene to ventilate the smoke from the home.

No one, including the two cats, was injured.

The house remains habitable, Perry added.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Gurnee Fire Department.
