One person was injured and residents were left homeless after a house fire broke out, prompting the response of numerous fire departments, in Crystal Lake Thursday afternoon.

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department and Crystal Lake Police Department responded around 1:14 p.m. Thursday to the 1400 block of Candlewood Drive in Crystal Lake for a report of a structure fire.

Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Brian Tamason said a caller reported a fire in the second-floor bathroom.

Firefighters arrived and found smoke showing from the roof of a two-story, single-family residence.

The response was upgraded to a working fire, prompting additional resources to respond, Tamason said.

The incident was soon again upgraded through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) to the box alarm level.

Firefighters pulled hose lines and went inside the home to locate and extinguish the fire.

Tamason said it was found that the fire had spread into the attic space from the second floor before the fire department arrived.

Fire crews located and extinguished the fire, bringing it under control at 1:47 p.m.

The fire damage was isolated to a second-floor bathroom and the attic but smoke and water damage were present throughout the second floor. The damage was estimated to be $100,000.

One person was treated at the scene by paramedics but declined transport to the hospital, Tamason said. No firefighters were injured.

The home was deemed uninhabitable and the residents were displaced.

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Cary, Huntley, McHenry Township, Nunda Rural and Wauconda fire districts responded to the scene to assist.

The Carpentersville, Marengo, West Dundee and Woodstock fire departments covered Crystal Lake’s fire stations.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department, Tamason added.
