Forecasters are warning about “wind-whipped” snow showers that could sharply reduce visibility and bring a few inches of snow to the Chicagoland area Saturday evening.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a hazardous weather outlook on Saturday afternoon for the northern Illinois area.
The outlook covers the Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Lake, Cook, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, Will, Ogle, Lee, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, Kankakee, Livingston, Iroquois and Ford counties.
The outlook said scattered to numerous wind-whipped snow showers are expected on Saturday, mainly during the evening hours.
The snow showers will produce sharply reduced visibilities and bring localized coatings of snow, possibly up to a few inches of accumulation across a narrow corridor or two, the outlook said.
The NWS said motorists should be aware of potentially hazardous travel due to the quick snow accumulations and rapidly changing conditions.
Timing for the brief, heavy snow showers is expected from 5 p.m. to midnight.
The blustery conditions with scattered snow showers will give way to quieter weather to start next week.
It will be short-lived as periods of mainly light precipitation are expected to return mid-week, the NWS said.
