A suspect breaking into cars stole a vehicle and rammed a police squad, leading to a high-speed 120 mph pursuit that traveled through Lake County Sunday evening.

The North Chicago Police Department responded around 10:44 p.m. Sunday to the 4100 block of Sargo Court for a report of a burglary to motor vehicle.

North Chicago Assistant Police Chief Gary Lunn said a caller reported a suspect was breaking into vehicles in the area.

Officers arrived and saw a subject who fit the description of the suspect near a running vehicle.

The suspect appeared to be stealing the vehicle as officers arrived, Lunn said.

Officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, at which time he got into the driver’s seat of the vehicle and fled the area.

The suspect vehicle rammed into a squad car while fleeing and fled through multiple jurisdictions, Lunn said.

The pursuit continued and got onto eastbound Interstate 94 from Route 137 and traveled south all the way into Chicago, police radio traffic indicated.

Speeds were reported to be in excess of 115 mph as the chase passed Route 22 in the Lincolnshire area around 11:05 p.m.

The suspect vehicle turned off its headlights and taillights and speeds reached over 120 mph.

The chase continued on the Edens Expressway and entered Chicago where it was eventually terminated.

Officers confirmed that the vehicle involved had been stolen, Lunn said. It was later located abandoned in Chicago after the chase.

No suspects have been arrested and Lunn said the investigation remains ongoing.
