The coroner has released the identity of a 64-year-old man who died after he tried crossing the street and was hit by a car on Route 120 in McHenry Thursday evening.
The McHenry Police Department and McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 5:20 p.m. Thursday to the area of Route 120, also known as Elm Street, and Meadow Lane for a report of a crash involving a pedestrian.
Officers arrived and found a pedestrian who had been struck by a car and was unresponsive.
McHenry County Coroner Dr. Michael Rein identified the victim on Friday as Ronald Wills, 64, of McHenry.
Police officials said a preliminary investigation determined a red 2008 Ford Focus was traveling eastbound on Elm Street.
Wills was walking southbound attempting to cross Elm Street just east of Meadow Lane when the Ford struck him.
A second vehicle, which was also traveling eastbound on Elm Street, was struck by the Ford as the second vehicle stopped to avoid hitting Wills, police officials said.
Wills, who was not in the crosswalk, was unconscious and not breathing at the scene. A medical helicopter was placed on standby but canceled.
Paramedics performed lifesaving measures on Wills and transported him to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry where he was pronounced dead, police officials said.
Rein said an autopsy has been scheduled on Wills for Tuesday.
Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor in the incident.
No citations or charges have been issued as the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The McHenry County Regional Crash Assistance Team responded to the scene to assist in the crash investigation.
The team consists of police officers from the McHenry Police Department, Woodstock Police Department, Spring Grove Police Department, Harvard Police Department, Cary Police Department, Johnsburg Police Department and the Lake in the Hills Police Department.
A portion of the intersection was shut down for approximately three hours before being reopened by around 8:15 p.m.
“The McHenry Police Department wants to thank our community for their patience while we conducted this investigation,” the department said.
