A 64-year-old man died after he tried crossing the street and was hit by a car, which then struck a second vehicle, on Route 120 in McHenry Thursday evening, police said.

The McHenry Police Department and McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 5:20 p.m. Thursday to the area of Route 120, also known as Elm Street, and Meadow Lane for a report of a crash involving a pedestrian.

Police officials said a preliminary investigation determined a red 2008 Ford Focus was traveling eastbound on Elm Street.

A 64-year-old McHenry man was walking southbound attempting to cross Elm Street just east of Meadow Lane when the Ford struck him.

A second vehicle, which was also traveling eastbound on Elm Street, was struck by the Ford as the second vehicle stopped to avoid hitting the pedestrian, police officials said.
