A clipper system will bring steady and fluffy snow to the Chicagoland area Sunday afternoon into the evening as an arctic front brings wind chills 20-25 degrees below zero.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a hazardous weather outlook for northeast Illinois on Sunday morning.
The outlook includes Lake, McHenry, Boone, Winnebago, Will, Cook, Ogle, Lee, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, Kankakee, Livingston, Iroquois and Ford counties.
Light accumulating snow is expected to develop late Sunday afternoon and continue through the evening, with hazardous travel conditions possible, the NWS said.
A clipper system will bring the period of steady and fluffy snow followed by an arctic front that will sweep across the area after midnight with blustery northwest winds and tumbling temperatures.
A cold weather advisory was issued for the area ahead of the bitterly cold temperatures that will continue through Tuesday morning.
The coldest wind chills of 20-25 degrees below zero will occur on Monday morning. “Limit time outdoors and cover all exposed skin!” the weather service said.
The snow will begin by 3-5 p.m. in the Rockford area and 4-6 p.m. in the Cook County area. It will end by midnight Sunday.
Forecasters say the arctic front will be accompanied by northwest winds gusting over 35 mph.
Reinforcing shots of arctic air will move across the Great Lakes region next weekend and beyond, the NWS said.
“Bitterly to even dangerously cold temperatures may materialize, with wind chills staying below zero through all of next weekend,” the weather service said.
