A man suffered smoke inhalation while trying to extinguish a fire that broke out in the living room of a house near Harvard Saturday evening, fire officials said.
The Harvard Fire Protection District responded around 7:29 p.m. Saturday to the 10900 block of White Oaks Road in unincorporated Harvard for a report of a residential structure fire.
Harvard Fire Protection District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha said a 911 caller reported that a fire had occurred in the living room of the home.
Firefighters arrived on the scene and found nothing showing from the two-story farmhouse.
The homeowner reported that the fire had been extinguished prior to the arrival of fire crews, Vucha said.
Firefighters made entry into the residence and located the area where the fire occurred in the living room. It was in close proximity to a wood-burning stove.
Vucha said firefighters ventilated the home of smoke and confirmed that no active fire remained.
The residence was not damaged and remains habitable.
An adult male from the home was evaluated at the scene by paramedics for smoke inhalation.
He declined additional medical treatment and refused transport to the hospital, Vucha said.
The Harvard Fire Protection District said they remind residents that all heat sources, including wood-burning stoves, fireplaces and space heaters, require proper clearance.
Combustible items such as furniture, decorations, firewood and other household belongings should be kept at least three feet away from any heat source to reduce the risk of fire, the fire district said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Harvard Fire Protection District but is not considered suspicious in nature.
