A 911 call reporting the caller had shot their mother prompted an emergency response to a home near McHenry but was determined to be a fake “swatting” call.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 7:35 a.m. last Thursday to the 200 block of Lily Lake Road in unincorporated McHenry for a traumatic injury call.
A female called 911 to report she had shot her mother at the home, according to police radio traffic.
The caller claimed she put the gun down in the kitchen and the mother was in the living room, shot in the chest.
The caller further claimed she shot her during an argument over an iPad.
The call prompted a large police response to the home and led to the fire department staging nearby.
McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Communication Specialist Emily Matusek-Baker said deputies arrived but did not find anyone injured.
Evidence at the scene was inconsistent with the original 911 call, Matusek-Baker said.
Matusek-Baker said deputies determined there was no threat to the household or the public.
The residents were home at the time of the incident and were ordered out of the home by deputies, who searched the home and property.
The incident remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Unit.
