Fire officials say a pickup truck pulling a trailer crashed into an electrical pole, snapping it in half and causing Route 173 to be partially shut down near Harvard Thursday afternoon.

The Harvard Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 12:40 p.m. Thursday to Route 173 and Crowley Road in unincorporated Harvard for a report of a vehicle crash with entrapment.

Harvard Fire Protection District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha said fire crews arrived and found a single-vehicle crash but confirmed no one was trapped.

The crash involved a Ford pickup truck, which was hauling a trailer, that had struck a utility pole.

It was reported initially that the truck rolled over onto its side during the crash but came to rest upright.

Two occupants were inside the truck and both were evaluated by paramedics but declined transport to the hospital, Vucha said.

The electrical pole involved was snapped at the base with live wires overhead of the crash scene.

Motorists were asked to avoid the area of Route 173 between Altenburg Road and Crowley Road while crews worked to clear the scene.

ComEd responded to the scene to repair the damaged pole and a tow truck removed the truck once the pole was repaired, Vucha said.

While Route 173 was initially requested to be completely shut down, deputies maintained one lane of travel and directed vehicles through the scene.

The fire district said strong north winds continue to cause snow-covered and drifting road conditions, particularly on east and west roadways in rural areas.

“Drivers are urged to slow down and use extra caution if travel is necessary,” the district said.

It is unclear whether the crash was the result of the hazardous road conditions. The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.
