Police arrested one suspect on Thursday after a group physically attacked and injured a child while robbing him of $20 in cash and breaking his phone in Crystal Lake.
Camden F. Schmidt, 18, of Crystal Lake, was charged with robbery, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, mob action, criminal damage to property and theft.
A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court said a robbery occurred in Crystal Lake around 1 p.m. on November 24.
The complaint said Schmidt, while a member of a mob, robbed a juvenile victim.
The group struck the victim multiple times on the head and body, allowing Schmidt to steal property belonging to the child, the complaint said.
The boy suffered great bodily harm after being struck multiple times, which resulted in visible injury.
Schmidt damaged the juvenile’s Samsung Galaxy cell phone by breaking the glass screen, the complaint said.
The complaint said Schmidt stole $20 in cash and a cannabis vape cartridge.
The Crystal Lake Police Department investigated the case and obtained the charges against Schmidt on Thursday.
He was transported to the McHenry County Jail and appeared in Initial Appearance Court on Friday.
The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain Schmidt pending trial, arguing he poses a danger to the community.
McHenry County Judge Michael Feetterer denied the petition and allowed him to be released on pre-trial conditions.
Schmidt was placed on pre-trial supervision with GPS monitoring and ordered to have no contact with the victim or his residence.
He is scheduled to appear in court again on February 13 for a status of preliminary hearing.
The Crystal Lake Police Department has not released any information on the incident and it is unknown whether any other arrests have been made in the case.
