A suspect was able to elude deputies after fleeing multiple times before they engaged in an active pursuit, which ended in a crash in Waukegan, authorities said.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle around 4 p.m. on January 17 in the area of Metropolitan Avenue and Yorkhouse Road in Beach Park.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said the driver of the Chevrolet Malibu refused to stop and fled from deputies.
The driver of the Malibu had previously fled from law enforcement on multiple occasions prior to that.
Covelli said the driver was known to be operating the vehicle with stolen license plates.
Deputies did not pursue the Chevrolet at the time but spotted it again a short time later.
They saw the Chevrolet around 4:45 p.m. in the area of McAree Road and Walnut Street in Waukegan and deputies attempted another traffic stop.
Covelli said the driver again fled and deputies pursued the vehicle for approximately three to four minutes as it traveled on several roadways throughout Waukegan.
The fleeing Chevrolet sideswiped another vehicle during the pursuit near the intersection of Porter Street and Jackson Street.
The driver of the bystander vehicle was not injured.
Deputies terminated the pursuit after the crash due to public safety considerations, Covelli said. The fleeing vehicle continued from the area.
Covelli said the driver was later identified as Marco A. Sajuan, 39, of Waukegan.
Deputies later obtained an arrest warrant charging Sajuan with four counts of aggravated fleeing to elude a peace officer, a Class 4 felony.
Sajuan remains wanted and is not in the custody of the sheriff’s office as of Monday.
