Forecasters are warning that accumulating snow of about 1 inch per hour could bring a “prolonged period” of travel impacts in Lake County on Friday.
National Weather Service officials in Chicago said a winter weather advisory remains in effect for Lake County from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and includes the cities of Mundelein, Buffalo Grove, Waukegan, and Gurnee.
Officials said a burst of accumulating snow is expected to begin Friday morning and could end with a total possible accumulation of 2 to 3 inches Friday afternoon.
The snowfall is expected to accumulate at a rate of about 1 inch per hour, forecasters said.
Forecasters said the snow during this period will make for slick travel conditions.
A prolonged lake effect snow event will affect portions of northwest Indiana and northeast Illinois from Friday through late Saturday, officials said.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a hazardous weather outlook for northern Illinois on Wednesday morning.
The outlook covers the Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Lake, Cook, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, Will, Ogle, Lee, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, Kankakee, Livingston, Iroquois and Ford counties.
Lake effect snow will likely impact portions of northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana. Snow will be fluffy and slippery.
Temperatures in the single digits and teens will lead to less effective road treatments, the outlook said.
In addition to the snow, cold conditions will remain in place to close out the week.
Cold conditions will continue through Saturday, but a gradual warming trend is expected to start Sunday and run into next week, the NWS said.
Another chance for snow could come Sunday night through Monday morning, officials said.
