Nearly 1,000 people from McHenry County took over a highly visible intersection in McHenry to protest federal immigration enforcement actions taking place across the United States, organizers said.
Indivisible McHenry County said the peaceful roadside protest entitled “ICE Out Now!” ran at the corner of Route 31 and McCullum Lake Road in McHenry from noon until 2 p.m. Sunday.
Sue Rose of Indivisible McHenry County said the roadside event was “meaningful.”
“Approximately 1,000 defenders of democracy braved the cold to proclaim that they want ICE and border patrol to quit their deadly and dangerous invasions of our cities,” Rose said after the event. “It was a meaningful event.”
Rose said previously the purpose of the event was to “protest the violent, deadly, and unconstitutional actions perpetrated by ICE and Border Patrol, and to show solidarity for our neighbors in Minnesota.”
Participants brought their own signs and flags expressing their dislike for the federal government.
“No Fascist FDT,” one sign read, while another said “Ice Out” and “If you’re silent, you are complicit.”
According to their news releases, Indivisible McHenry County is a non-partisan group of progressive individuals who value democracy, equal rights, and due process for all.
This is the second such protest Indivisible McHenry County has held in McHenry County in recent weeks.
An event held two weeks prior protested the death of Minnesota protestor Renee Good drew about 700 people, Indivisible McHenry County organizers said.
