One person sustained minor injuries after a fire broke out in a 12th-floor unit of a high-rise apartment complex in Waukegan on Saturday.
Waukegan Fire Marshall Todd Zupac said fire crews were called to the 500 block of Washington Street at about 1 p.m. Saturday when an automatic fire alarm went off in the building.
The building was identified as the Lilac Ledge Apartment Complex, a senior apartment complex located in Waukegan.
Upon arrival, maintenance advised fire command that there was smoke on the 12th floor, Zupac said.
Arriving units deployed to the 12th floor, and the alarm was upgraded to a Box level due to the fire taking place in a high-rise structure.
Crews moved in place to extinguish the fire in a single unit while multiple other companies conducted searches and evacuated occupants in the immediate vicinity of the affected apartment, Zupac said.
Occupants of the other floors remained in place and were not affected by the smoke or fire, Zupac said.
Firefighters conducted an overhaul and ventilation response where the fire took place on the 12th floor.
The occupants were not home at the time of the fire, Zupac said.
One minor injury was reported from someone in a neighboring unit, Zupac said.
That person was evaluated by paramedics for some smoke inhalation, he said.
The injured person refused transport to the hospital, he said.
No injuries to firefighters were reported, Zupac said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
