Lake County Coroner officials have identified a teen driver who died when his car hit another vehicle, left the roadway, and slammed into a pole on Washington Street in Grayslake Monday afternoon.
Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek said Jonathan Williams, 19, of Lake Villa, was identified as the driver of a black Volkswagen that crashed into a Toyota SUV at about 2:13 p.m. Monday.
Officials from the Grayslake Police Department said they responded to an accident with injuries at the intersection of Washington Street and Atkinson Road and found the Lake Villa teen’s black Volkswagen and a blue Toyota SUV with heavy damage.
Initial reports show Williams was traveling eastbound on Washington Street when it struck a westbound Toyota SUV driven by an 86-year-old female.
Police said the Toyota was attempting to turn southbound onto Atkinson Road before the crash, police said.
The Volkswagen left the roadway after striking the Toyota and collided with a traffic light pole on the southeast side of the intersection, police said.
Batallion Chief Jason Brooks of the Grayslake Fire Protection District said it took fire crews 16 minutes to extract Williams from the Volkswagen before he could be transported to the hospital.
Banek said Williams was pronounced dead in the emergency room of Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
Banek said preliminary results of an autopsy conducted Tuesday indicate that Williams died from blunt force injuries to the head as a result of the crash.
Police said the 86-year-old female was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Mundelein, Libertyville, and College of Lake County Police Departments assisted with the crash, authorities said.
Washington Street was shut down between Route 83 and Lancer Lane while the crash was investigated.
The roadway reopened at 6:15 p.m.
The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team was requested to the scene and is assisting the Grayslake Police in investigating the cause of the crash, police said.
