Salvador Garibay-Sanchez, 31, of Racine, Wisc.

Waukegan Police have released additional details involving a funeral home shooting on Friday that resulted in two people being injured and the gunman detained in Lake County Jail until trial.

Wauekgan Deputy Police Chief Craig Neal said police were called to the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in the 1500 block of Washington Street at 9:21 p.m. on Friday for a report of a subject who was shot.

Upon arrival, officers found a 21-year-old Waukegan resident who had been shot twice in the abdomen.

Neal said officers rendered aid to the victim until Waukegan Fire and Rescue responded to the scene to assist.

The victim was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for emergency treatment.

The victim is currently listed in stable condition after surgery, Neal said.

While investigating, officers learned that a 29-year-old Zion resident had been shot in the leg.

That victim was transported by a friend to the Lake Forest Hospital for emergency treatment, Neal said.

That victim has since been treated and released, Neal said.

According to witness statements, Neal said family members and the two victims were attending a funeral service when the suspect entered the funeral home while holding a handgun.

The suspect approached the 21-year-old victim and fired several gunshots, resulting in the victim being struck twice in the abdomen, Neal said.

Preliminary information suggests the second victim was an innocent bystander who was struck by a stray bullet.

Neal said investigators were able to identify the suspect as Salvadore Garibay-Sanchez, 31, of Waukegan.

His information was shared with surrounding jurisdictions, Neal said, and he was taken into custody by the Lake Forest Police Department while heading southbound on Skokie Highway near the Lake Forest Hospital.

Assistant Lake County State’s Attorney Nicholas Ghezevat said in court Sunday that multiple witnesses saw a person identified as Garibay-Sanchez enter the funeral home carrying a handgun and open fire.

Ghezevat said surveillance video obtained from the funeral home also showed a white truck pulling up to the funeral home and Garibay-Sanchez exiting the vehicle with a handgun. The video also showed Garibay-Sanchez leave the funeral home after the shooting.

Garibay-Sanchez was wearing the same clothing the gunman was wearing in the surveillance video, Ghezevat said.

Garibay-Sanchez made spontaneous statements taking responsibility for the shooting following his arrest, Ghezevat said.

Ghezevat said Garibay-Sanchez told police he got into an argument with the victim over money, left the funeral home, drove to his house, picked up a handgun, then drove back to the funeral home and shot the victim.

Garibay-Sanchez was ordered held in Lake County Jail until trial following a detention hearing on Monday afternoon.

Garibay-Sanchez is charged by the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office with one Class X felony count of attempted murder and two Class X felony counts of Aggravated Battery Involving a Firearm.

Prior to Friday’s incident, Garibay-Sanchez had completed probation after pleading guilty to holding a gun to a victim’s head at a bakery in Waukegan in 2023, authorities said.

In the previous case, Garibay-Sanchez walked into the bakery armed with a gun on Nov. 13, 2023, and pointed it unprovoked at a person’s head before ordering them to the ground.

Court records show Garibay-Sanchez pleaded guilty in the first case to a Class 4 felony count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon without a FOID card in January of 2024.

He was sentenced to probation and ordered to perform 100 hours of public service, court records show.

That probation ended in November of 2025.
