McHenry Police were successful in de-escalating a situation on Thursday involving an armed person suffering from a mental health crisis.
Officers responded to the 3300 block of Elm Street in McHenry at 7:33 p.m. Thursday for a subject self-reporting a mental health crisis, said Nicholas Clesen, Commander of Support Services for the McHenry Police Department.
The person also told police they were armed and that officers were going to have to enter the residence to take the weapon away, Clesen said.
Due to the information provided, Clesen said several officers responded to the area.
A patrol sergeant spoke with the subject by phone, and within a minute, the person voluntarily complied and exited the residence without the weapon.
Clesen said police later discovered the weapon was an airsoft gun.
The subject was detained and transported by the McHenry Township Fire Protection District to Northwestern Medicine – Woodstock Hospital for treatment, Clesen said.
No charges will be brought against the subject, Clesen said. As a result, the name of the person involved is not being released.
