One person became trapped in their vehicle and was seriously injured after three vehicles crashed at a busy Mundelein intersection Saturday morning.
The Mundelein Police Department and Mundelein Fire Department responded around 8:50 a.m. Saturday to Route 45 and Route 176 for the three-vehicle crash with injuries.
Police officers arrived first and reported one person was unconscious and trapped in their vehicle, according to fire department radio traffic.
The call was upgraded to a vehicle crash with entrapment, dispatching additional fire engines and ambulances.
Firefighter/paramedics arrived to find two SUVs and a van with heavy damage, said Mundelein Fire Department Acting Shift Commander Lt. Kurt Rodewald.
Crews removed the driver’s side door of one of the vehicles to extricate an occupant, which took around 10-15 minutes.
They were transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with serious injuries.
Another person was medically evaluated but refused to be transported to the hospital, and a third person refused to be evaluated, Rodewald said.
Two fire engines and two ambulances from the Mundelein Fire Department and one fire engine from the Countryside Fire Protection District tended to the scene.
The crash caused heavy traffic delays on Routes 45 and 176.
Tow trucks from Ernie’s Wrecker Service responded to remove the vehicles.
The crash was cleared up at around 9:35 a.m.
