The Illinois State Police has been called in to investigate an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a 58-year-old Waukegan resident on Saturday afternoon.

Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Craig Neal said the Waukegan 911 Center received a call at 2:54 p.m. Saturday for a male subject in the 1000 block of Leith Avenue who had attempted to commit suicide.

Three Waukegan officers responded to the Leith Avenue address to investigate, Neal said.

Neal did not release details regarding what led up to the shooting, except to say there was an officer-involved shooting that left one person dead.

He added that Waukegan Fire and Rescue were on scene to assist the resident.

He said the resident succumbed to his injuries on scene, and no other people were injured as a result of the shooting.

Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Newton said late Saturday night that an autopsy on the deceased male is scheduled to take place on Monday morning.

Newton added that the investigation into the incident is ongoing and no further details will be provided at this time.

The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit has been called in to conduct an independent investigation into the shooting, Neal said.

He said additional information will be released once the investigation is complete.

A video posted on Promociones Noticias Y Mas on Facebook captured the aftermath of the incident.

In the video taken from down the street, the unidentified neighbor said the person killed ran out of the house carrying a machete while making a stabbing motion with the weapon toward the police.

The video captures more than a dozen officers at the Leith Avenue residence shortly after police put up yellow caution tape around the house.

The body remained covered in the front yard of the residence until a Lake County Coroner’s van arrived on scene at about 9:30 p.m. and took the deceased male away.

The investigation at the scene was completed, and the caution tape was removed at about 10:35 p.m.

Waukegan Alderman Juan Martinez broke the news about the shooting Saturday, saying in a statement online that there was a “police involved shooting that resulted in a fatality” in the Waukegan 3rd Ward, which he represents.

He added at the time, “There is no danger to our residents and community.”
