The Lake County Coroner’s Office has identified a 58-year-old man who died during a Waukegan police officer-involved shooting on Saturday afternoon.
Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek identified Ricardo Delafuente, of Waukegan, as the person shot and killed by police in the 1000 block of Leith Avenue.
She added the results from an autopsy conducted Monday indicate that Delafuente died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Craig Neal said the Waukegan 911 Center received a call at 2:54 p.m. Saturday for a male subject who had attempted to commit suicide.
Three Waukegan officers responded to the Leith Avenue address to investigate, Neal said.
Neal did not release details regarding what led up to the shooting, except to say there was an officer-involved shooting that left one person dead.
He added that Waukegan Fire and Rescue were on scene to assist the resident.
He said the resident succumbed to his injuries at the scene, and no other people were injured as a result of the shooting.
Banek said paramedics were staging nearby after the initial call came in, then went to the scene to evaluate Delafuente after the shooting.
Delafuente was formally pronounced dead at the scene, Banek said.
Banek did not release any further information on the extent of the injuries due to the ongoing investigation.
The investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit.
A video posted on Promociones Noticias Y Mas on Facebook captured the aftermath of the incident.
In the video taken from down the street, an unidentified neighbor said the person who was shot and killed ran out of the house carrying a machete while making a stabbing motion with the weapon toward the police.
The video captures more than a dozen officers at the Leith Avenue residence shortly after police put up yellow caution tape around the house.
The body remained covered in the front yard of the residence until a Lake County Coroner’s van arrived on scene at about 9:30 p.m. and took the deceased male away.
The investigation at the scene was completed, and the caution tape was removed at about 10:35 p.m.
Waukegan Alderman Juan Martinez broke the news about the shooting Saturday, saying in a statement online that there was a “police involved shooting that resulted in a fatality” in the Waukegan 3rd Ward, which he represents.
“While I don’t have all the details at this moment, I can confirm that the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit is currently leading the investigation at the scene,” Martinez said.
He added at the time, “There is no danger to our residents and community.”
