A Zion man was hospitalized in serious condition after the sheriff says his car slammed into two stopped cars that were in traffic at a stop sign near Antioch Thursday evening.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Newport Fire Protection District responded around 5:15 p.m. Thursday to the area of Hunt Club Road and State Line Road in unincorporated Antioch for a vehicle crash with injuries.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Matthew Harmon said deputies arrived and found a three-vehicle crash.
An investigation showed a 2026 Dodge Durango, driven by a 49-year-old Salem, Wisconsin, man, was stopped at the stop sign for northbound Hunt Club Road at State Line Road.
A 2020 Chevrolet Colorado, driven by a 48-year-old Trevor, Wisconsin, woman, was stopped behind the Dodge, Harmon said.
A 2017 Toyota Yaris, driven by a 32-year-old Zion man, was traveling northbound on Hunt Club Road at the same time.
Harmon said the Toyota failed to reduce speed and rear-ended the Chevrolet at a high rate of speed.
The impact caused the Chevrolet to hit the rear of the Durango and then leave the roadway.
The driver of the Toyota was transported from the scene by ambulance to an area hospital in serious condition, Harmon said. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
The drivers of the Dodge and Chevrolet declined medical treatment. No passengers were in any of the vehicles.
An initial report of one of the cars catching on fire was unfounded, Harmon said.
Police shut down Hunt Club Road between State Line Road and Edwards Road for approximately three hours for the crash investigation.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.
