Funeral services were held for a man, who was from Mexico, who was fatally shot by officers who were responding to a suicidal person call in Waukegan Saturday afternoon.

The Waukegan 911 dispatch center received a 911 call for a subject at a residence who had attempted to commit suicide, according to Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Craig Neal.

Neal said officers responded to the scene in the 1000 block of Leith Avenue around 2:54 p.m. Saturday.

Three officers arrived on the scene to investigate when an officer-involved shooting occurred, Neal said.

The police department did not release what led up to the shooting, how many officers fired their weapons or how many times the man was struck.

Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek said Ricardo Delafuente, 58, of Waukegan, suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Delafuente was the person who had attempted suicide that prompted the 911 call, Banek said. He was a resident at the home where the incident occurred.

An independent investigation is being conducted by the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit.

In a video taken from down the street, an unidentified neighbor said the person who was shot and killed ran out of the house carrying a machete while making a stabbing motion with the weapon toward the police.

The video captures more than a dozen officers at the Leith Avenue residence shortly after police set up yellow crime scene tape around the house.

The body remained covered in the front yard of the residence until a Lake County coroner’s van arrived on scene at about 9:30 p.m. and took Delafuente away.

The investigation at the scene was completed and the caution tape was removed at about 10:35 p.m.
