Residents were left homeless after an overnight fire broke out and sent flames and smoke from their house near McHenry Saturday morning, fire officials said.
The McHenry Township Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 1:52 a.m. Saturday to the 2500 block of North Freedom Drive in unincorporated McHenry for a report of a structure fire.
McHenry Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Chris Kozel said the residents called 911 to report the fire.
Fire crews arrived within six minutes and found a single-family residence with flames showing from the attic of the attached garage.
Sheriff’s deputies were first on the scene and were escorting three people out of the home when the fire department arrived, Kozel said.
Firefighters began an aggressive fire attack and searched the residence for any potential trapped victims.
Kozel said firefighters were able to contain the fire to the attached garage and attic but there was some smoke and water damage throughout the main living area.
The residents were left displaced after the home was deemed uninhabitable until repairs can be made.
No injuries were reported to any residents or firefighters, Kozel said. Several dogs were unharmed in a fenced area of the property.
The Spring Grove, Fox Lake, Wonder Lake, Round Lake, Richmond, Cary, Crystal Lake, Nunda, Wauconda and Antioch fire departments responded to assist at the scene and cover McHenry fire stations.
The Salvation Army Canteen responded to the scene to provide refreshments to the firefighters.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the McHenry Township Fire Protection District.
