The coroner has released the identity of a 50-year-old man who died after he fell from the roof of a house he owned while he and others were working on the home near Spring Grove.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Fox Lake Fire Protection District responded around 4 p.m. Monday to the 27600 block of West Lakeshore Drive in unincorporated Spring Grove for a report of a fall victim.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found paramedics already on the scene performing lifesaving measures, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.
The victim was unconscious and not breathing.
Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Newton identified the man on Friday as Piotr Bleszko, 50, of Niles.
Other workers witnessed the fall, rendered aid and called 911, Newton said, adding that Bleszko had fallen from the roof of a home he was working on.
A preliminary investigation showed Bleszko was working on the roof of a home he owned without safety equipment, Covelli said.
He slipped and slid down the roof, falling from the peak of the second story of the home.
Covelli said Bleszko struck a fence before ultimately striking the ground, suffering fatal injuries.
“Tragically, the man was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene,” Covelli said.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene to take possession of Bleszko for an autopsy.
An autopsy performed showed Bleszko died as a result of blunt force injuries to the neck and chest due to a fall from height.
Sheriff’s detectives responded and determined the fall was an “unfortunate accident” and not suspicious in nature, Covelli added.
A funeral visitation for Bleszko is scheduled for 2-6 p.m. Sunday at Skaja Terrace Funeral Home in Niles.
A funeral service is set for 10:15 a.m. Monday followed by a funeral mass at 11 a.m. at St. John Brebeuf Church in Niles and an interment at Maryhill Cemetery in Niles.
