Police are seeking the public’s help after a woman was fatally struck by a vehicle that fled the scene on Sheridan Road in Winthrop Harbor late Thursday evening.
The Winthrop Harbor Fire Department, Zion Fire-Rescue Department and Winthrop Harbor Police Department responded around 11:10 p.m. Thursday to the 1400 block of Sheridan Road in Winthrop Harbor for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Winthrop Harbor Deputy Fire Chief Brian Haske said fire crews arrived and found a person down in the roadway.
An ambulance transported the victim to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan with life-threatening injuries, Haske said.
Winthrop Harbor Police Chief Anthony Velardi said a preliminary investigation shows the pedestrian was struck by a vehicle that was traveling northbound on Sheridan Road.
The victim died after arriving at Vista Medical Center East. The Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified.
The driver and vehicle involved fled the scene following the crash.
The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification to their next of kin, Velardi said.
Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Newton said the victim was a female in her 50s. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday morning.
The suspect vehicle is believed to have continued northbound after the collision. Investigators say they are working to identify the vehicle and driver involved.
The Winthrop Harbor Police Department requested the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) to the scene for the crash reconstruction and investigation.
Velardi said the department is requesting assistance from the public.
