The coroner has released the identity of a 21-year-old woman who died after she and a second person, who was flown to the hospital, were critically injured in a crash with a semi-truck on I-90 in Huntley.
An autopsy performed Tuesday showed that Dasiree Cunningham, 21, of Rockford, died as a result of injuries to her brain from a vehicle crash, according to McHenry County Coroner Dr. Michael Rein.
The Huntley Fire Protection District and Illinois State Police responded around 4:30 a.m. Thursday to Interstate 90 near Route 47 for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Huntley Fire Protection District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha said fire crews arrived and located a two-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes of Interstate 90 just west of Route 47 near the 46.25 mile marker.
A semi-tractor-trailer truck and a Chevrolet Malibu, which sustained heavy damage, were involved.
The sedan sustained major damage and came to rest off the roadway.
Firefighters determined that minor extrication was required to remove two occupants, including Cunningham, from the sedan, Vucha said.
The passenger of the Chevrolet was reported to be unresponsive at the scene.
Vucha said Cunningham and the second victim suffered serious to critical injuries that were life-threatening.
Ambulances transported them to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital. State police said those two included the driver and a passenger.
Rein said Cunningham was pronounced dead at the hospital around 5:30 a.m. the same day.
A LifeNet medical helicopter was called to the hospital helipad to transport the second victim due to the extent of their injuries, Vucha said.
The helicopter flew that victim to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for trauma care, Vucha said.
State police have not released an updated condition on the surviving victim but said Tuesday they remain alive.
The driver of the semi-truck was uninjured. The semi-truck was reported to be leaking fuel into the ditch following the crash.
The westbound entrance ramp from Route 47 to Interstate 90 was shut down for several hours while emergency crews operated at the scene and the crash was investigated.
Two right lanes of westbound Interstate 90 were shut down. All lanes were reopened around 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police, which has not released further details on the cause.
