No one was injured and a Zion home remains habitable after firefighters quickly extinguished a fire in the attached garage and stopped it from spreading to the house Monday evening.

The Zion Fire-Rescue Department and Zion Police Department responded around 9:55 p.m. Monday to the 4200 block of Swan Lane in Zion for a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived and found smoke coming from the front of the house, according to fire department radio traffic.

Zion Battalion Fire Chief Nick Urbanik said that all of the residents had safely evacuated prior to the fire department’s arrival.

Crews quickly pulled hoselines and attacked the fire.

The fire was brought under control in less than 10 minutes after crews arrived, Urbanik said.

A Working Still Alarm was initially requested, which dispatched additional fire apparatus from departments in the area, but most of them were disregarded once the fire was under control, Urbanik said.

The change of quarters units continued to both of Zion’s fire stations and covered other calls, like a medical call, during the incident.

Firefighters initially experienced some difficulty accessing the garage due to ATVs and UTVs that were in the way.

No one was injured, Urbanik added.

The garage was damaged, but the damage was mostly contained to the garage and there was minimal fire extension to the house itself.

The house remains habitable.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Urbanik said it appears the fire started in or around a recycling bin in the garage.
