Two people were transported to the hospital after a car on Metra’s Milwaukee District North line tracks was struck by a freight train, causing heavy damage in Round Lake Park Friday morning.

The Round Lake Park Police Department and Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District responded around 2:52 a.m. Friday to the area of West Main Street and Porter Drive in Round Lake Park for a vehicle versus train crash.

Emergency crews arrived and found the crash involving a 2021 Nissan sedan, which had heavy damage, and a freight train.

A Metra spokesperson said a Wisconsin & Southern Railroad freight train was involved and two people were injured.

They were both transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in unknown condition, the spokesperson said.

Police radio traffic indicated the car may have been stopped on the Milwaukee District North line tracks when it was struck by the train.

The impact caused the car to be pushed off the tracks and onto the roadway.

Two occupants were in the car at the time and both were possibly intoxicated, radio traffic indicated.

All train traffic was halted on the tracks until the scene was cleared and an investigation was conducted. A track inspector also responded to evaluate for potentially track damage.

The car was towed from the scene and the freight train involved was released around 4:45 a.m.

The Metra spokesperson declined to release further information on the incident despite the Metra Police Department leading the investigation.

They deferred comment to Wisconsin & Southern Railroad, which told Lake and McHenry County Scanner they had no comment on the incident.
