Forecasters say severe weather rolling through Illinois could bring damaging winds and hail to Lake and McHenry counties beginning Tuesday afternoon into the evening.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a hazardous weather outlook on Tuesday morning for Lake, McHenry, Winnebago, Kane, Cook, Will, DuPage, Boone, Ogle, Lee, DeKalb, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, Kankakee, Livingston, Iroquois and Ford counties.
The outlook said portions of northeast and north central Illinois will see elevated thunderstorm risk and elevated flooding risk.
Areas of dense fog will continue through late Tuesday morning, mainly north of Interstate 80 and particularly near and west of the Fox Valley.
Severe thunderstorms will be possible Tuesday afternoon through the evening, the outlook said.
The NWS said a front is expected to set up along or just south of the Interstate 80 corridor with large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes possible south of the front.
Large hail, bigger than two inches in diameter, and damaging winds, over 60 mph, will be possible north of the front.
The severe weather threat may continue through Tuesday night, particularly south of Interstate 80, the outlook said.
Locally heavy rainfall may occur late Tuesday afternoon through early Wednesday morning and may lead to localized flash flooding.
The NWS said the earliest timing is 2-3 p.m. Tuesday with the most likely start being 4 p.m. and ending at 1 a.m. Wednesday.
Periods of rain will continue on Wednesday morning, ending from northwest to southeast.
The rain may mix with some light snow as it ends in areas north of Interstate 80, the NWS said.
Very windy conditions are expected Thursday night into Friday as a strong cold front moves across the region.
