Five people were hospitalized after a multiple-vehicle crash caused heavy damage and left two occupants trapped in the wreckage in Algonquin, fire officials said.

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District and Algonquin Police Department responded around 6 p.m. Sunday to Algonquin Road and Hanson Road in Algonquin for a vehicle crash with injuries.

Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District Fire Chief John Knebl said crews arrived and found a three-vehicle crash in the intersection.

A motorcycle was initially reported to be possibly involved but it was determined that the motorcyclist was a witness bystander and not involved.

A white Volkswagen SUV, a dark-colored Subaru SUV and a white sedan were involved.

Knebl said the crash resulted in heavy damage and an upgraded response was requested due to occupants being entrapped in a vehicle.

Eight patients were needing evaluation by paramedics and the response was upgraded to a Working EMS assignment, sending five ambulances to the scene.

Firefighters had to extricate two of the patients involved due to the intrusion on the passenger side of the vehicle, Knebl said.

Knebl said five of the eight people involved were transported by ambulances to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley.

Their conditions were not known but their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

The Crystal Lake, East Dundee and Cary fire departments assisted during the incident.

The Algonquin Police Department was investigating the cause of the crash. It is unknown if any citations or charges have been issued.
