A brawl broke out between nearly a dozen inmates at the Lake County Jail in Waukegan in late January, causing several of them to get injured and battery charges to be filed against them.

The fight broke out on January 31 while the inmates were allowed time out of their cells, Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said.

Corrections officers responded and stopped the fight.

No officers were injured, but several inmates sustained cuts and bruises during the fight, one of whom had a broken nose, Covelli said.

All the inmates involved in the fight were charged with battery and were subsequently placed in the maximum-security section of the jail.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, the incident appears to have originated from a prior dispute between several inmates that began before their incarceration,” Covelli said.

A total of nine inmates were charged with battery – Luis A. Aguilar, 29, of Round Lake Beach; Nicholas Sansone, 31, of Melrose Park; Kaleb Brown, 23, of unincorporated Lake Villa; Darryl G. Henderson, 31, with no permanent address; Alessis Botello, 23, of Wheeling; Ahkeen O. Smith-Turner, 27, of Waukegan; Alvaro Grijalva, 32, of Waukegan; Jamonte J. Davis, 28, of Zion; and Saul J. Quebrado, 34, of Waukegan.

During Quebrado’s detention hearing on March 3, Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Kailey Hopkins said that Quebrado was seen initiating the fight by getting out of his seat and starting an interaction.

Aguilar, Sansone, Smith-Turner, Grijalva, Davis, and Quebrado have already appeared in court since the fight.

The other inmates have scheduled court appearances later this month and next month.
