A driver was transported to the hospital after fire officials say a serious crash left a van rolled over into the water in a marsh area near Woodstock Thursday afternoon.
The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 4:07 p.m. Thursday to the 2400 block of Hartland Road in unincorporated Woodstock for a vehicle crash with a possible water rescue.
Sheriff’s deputies came upon the crash as it occurred across the street from the sheriff’s office’s training facility.
Fire crews arrived and found a serious crash involving a single vehicle, according to Woodstock Fire/Rescue District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha.
The Ford van appeared to have been traveling southbound on Hartland Road from Nelson Road in the area of Valley Hi Nursing and Rehabilitation for McHenry County.
Vucha said the vehicle left the roadway and sheared off approximately 150 feet of guardrail along the west side of the road.
The Ford then rolled over into the water approximately 15-20 feet off the roadway in a marsh area.
The adult male driver was able to escape from the vehicle prior to the arrival of emergency personnel, Vucha said.
A large water rescue response was initially dispatched but was canceled after it was confirmed that no one was in need of rescue.
He was evaluated by paramedics at the scene for minor injuries and transported to a local hospital, Vucha said.
A tow truck was called to remove the vehicle and Hartland Township was notified about the damaged guardrail.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
