Police rescued a dog, believed to have been used in dog fights, that was found severely neglected in Winthrop Harbor and is now available for adoption as he looks for his “forever home.”
Winthrop Harbor resident Megan Russell said officers with the Winthrop Harbor Police Department recently found a dog that was severely neglected.
The dog was suffering from severe malnutrition, various lacerations to the face and body, open sores on his hind legs and puncture wounds to the neck and under his snout.
It is believed the animal had been living on the street for a while and was used as a bait dog for dog fights.
He was transported to a veterinarian to receive proper medical attention but is expected to make a full recovery.
Russell said the dog is a “very sweet boy” and has shown no signs of aggression towards people.
The dog was being fostered by one of the officers until a permanent home can be found.
“We are raising funds for his medical care in hopes he can make a full recovery and find a loving home. At this time we need your help to raise the funds needed to bring this good boy back to great health,” Russell said.
“Any extra money raised will go towards the pup’s food and other needs at his forever home,” she said.
The dog, since his rescue, is doing “very well” and gaining weight every day.
He has finished a course of antibiotics and will soon be receiving all needed vaccinations now that he is strong enough.
Russell, who works for the village, said the dog is looking for his forever home and anyone who is interested in adopting him can contact her.
A GoFundMe account has raised over $1,500 with a goal of $7,000 to pay for expenses associated with his care.
