A driver was cited after officials say he caused a crash involving a McHenry County sheriff’s squad car in Woodstock while the deputy was responding to an emergency call.
The Woodstock Police Department and Woodstock Fire/Rescue District responded around 4 p.m. Tuesday to the intersection of Route 47 and Locust Avenue in Woodstock for a report of a two-vehicle crash.
Paramedics arrived and evaluated the drivers involved but neither requested any additional medical treatment, according to Woodstock Fire/Rescue District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha.
One of the vehicles involved was a McHenry County Sheriff’s Office squad vehicle, Vucha said, adding that he did not know the driver’s position within the sheriff’s office.
Emergency radio traffic indicated the driver of the other vehicle was bleeding.
“Our crews remained on scene to assist with scene safety while N. Seminary Avenue was closed in both directions. Once the vehicles were removed and the roadway was cleared, our units cleared the scene,” Vucha said.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office deferred comment on the matter to the Woodstock Police Department, which investigated the crash.
Woodstock Deputy Police Chief George Kopulos said officers learned that the sheriff’s deputy was traveling southbound on Route 47.
The deputy was responding with his lights and sirens activated to an emergency call.
Emergency radio traffic indicated deputies were responding to a domestic dispute in the Crystal Lake area.
A black 2017 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by a 77-year-old man, turned in front of the sheriff’s squad, causing the collision, Kopulos said.
Officers issued the 77-year-old male driver a citation for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle. No impairment was suspected.
