A motorcyclist was seriously injured after a Jeep caused a crash with the motorcycle in Zion Saturday evening, with intoxication suspected to be involved, police said.
The Zion Fire Rescue Department and Zion Police Department responded around 8:22 p.m. Saturday to the area of 21st Street and Gideon Avenue in Zion for a vehicle crash with injuries.
Officers arrived first and found a two-vehicle crash on 21st Street between Gideon Avenue and Gabriel Avenue.
A 36-year-old man was down in the roadway on 21st Street with lower body injuries, according to Zion Police Department Lt. Derek Zaloudek.
The injuries were serious enough that officers needed to apply a tourniquet to control the bleeding.
Zaloudek said officers conducted interviews with the involved parties and witnesses.
The preliminary investigation showed that a black 2011 Yamaha XVS1300 was traveling eastbound on 21st Street approaching Gabriel Avenue.
A black 2004 Jeep Liberty, driven by a 49-year-old man, was exiting the west alley of the 2100 block of Gabriel Avenue, Zaloudek said.
The Jeep was attempting to turn westbound onto 21st Street when the collision occurred.
The motorcyclist was transported to an area hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, Zaloudek said. The driver of the Jeep was uninjured.
The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was called to assist in the investigation due to the seriousness of the crash.
Bystanders reported that the driver of the Jeep was detained by officers at the scene. A bystander reported the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet.
He was later released without charges but impairment was suspected.
The Zion Police Department is working with MCAT and the investigation remains ongoing, Zaloudek said.
