A suspect was taken into custody after authorities say he attacked a victim with a tree branch and tried punching a second victim, both strangers to him, at a park in Vernon Hills Tuesday.
The Vernon Hills Police Department responded on Tuesday to Hartmann Park, 292 Oakwood Drive in Vernon Hills, for a report of a battery.
Prosecutors said a male suspect was walking out of the park as a 63-year-old man was entering the park.
The suspect picked up an approximately four-foot-long tree branch and swung it at the man’s face.
The victim was able to block the suspect from striking his face with the branch by raising his left arm and shoulder, prosecutors said.
The tree branch still struck the victim, causing pain. He did not require medical attention.
The victim began following the suspect and called 911.
The suspect then tried to attack a second person by throwing a punch at them, prosecutors said.
The suspect, who does not know either victim, was taken into custody by responding officers. Felony charges are pending against him.
The Vernon Hills Police Department has not released information on the case as of Wednesday afternoon.
