Five people were hospitalized after a pickup truck driver ran a red light and caused a four-vehicle crash along Route 12 in Deer Park, the sheriff’s office said.
The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department, Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Kildeer Police Department responded around 1:10 p.m. Saturday to the area of Route 12 and Deer Park Boulevard in Deer Park for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Dispatchers received numerous 911 calls from people involved and bystanders.
Initial reports indicated one person was possibly unconscious and one car was possibly on fire.
Emergency crews arrived and determined there was no active fire and all victims were conscious, Lake County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Matthew Harmon said.
Five ambulances were dispatched to the scene from the Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department, Barrington Fire Department and Long Grove Fire Protection District.
An investigation showed a 2013 Ford F-150, driven by a 76-year-old Elk Grove Village man, was traveling northbound on Route 12, also known as Rand Road.
A 2012 Toyota, driven by a 61-year-old Wauconda woman, was traveling southbound on Route 12, Harmon said.
The Toyota received a green arrow to turn left and the driver began turning eastbound onto Deer Park Boulevard in the outside left turn lane.
Harmon said a 2012 Chevrolet, driven by a 71-year-old Lake Zurich woman, also simultaneously began turning from southbound Route 12 onto eastbound Deer Park Boulevard in the inside left turn lane.
Witnesses confirmed to deputies that both the 2012 Chevrolet and 2012 Toyota had the green arrow to turn.
The Ford ran the red light and struck the Chevrolet and the Toyota in the intersection, Harmon said.
A fourth vehicle, a 2018 Mercedes-Benz, driven by a 64-year-old Buffalo Grove man, was traveling westbound on Deer Park Boulevard, approaching the intersection from the east.
The Ford traveled eastbound on Deer Park Boulevard after striking the Chevrolet and Toyota and then struck the Mercedes-Benz before coming to rest. The crash occurred at the entrance to The Shops at Kildeer.
Five people involved were transported by ambulances to area hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Ford was cited for causing the crash, Harmon said.
