Chickens were killed after a fire broke out and fully engulfed a chicken coop while damaging two other buildings near Huntley Saturday afternoon, fire officials said.

The Huntley Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 1:05 p.m. Saturday to the 6400 block of Suttondale Road in unincorporated Huntley for a report of a structure fire.

A 911 caller reported that a chicken coop was fully involved in flames and six feet from a house, according to fire department radio traffic.

Responding firefighters could see a large smoke header in the distance.

Huntley Fire Protection District Acting Battalion Chief Todd Penkava said the additional information from 911 callers indicating flames were visible prompted an upgrade to a Working Fire response, bringing additional resources to the scene.

Firefighters arrived to find a small-sized outbuilding structure, described as a chicken coop, fully involved in fire, Penkava said.

The chicken coop was approximately six feet from two other buildings, described as small sheds.

Firefighters quickly pulled a hose line and contained the fire to the building of origin, Penkava said.

There was minor exterior damage to the two adjacent buildings.

The fire was declared out at 1:30 p.m. The incident was downgraded and additional responding firefighters from other departments were canceled.

Penkava said there were chickens that died in the fire he is unsure of how many in total died.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Huntley fire investigators.
