A 62-year-old man was hospitalized but is expected to survive after he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle across Green Bay Road in North Chicago Tuesday morning.
The North Chicago Police Department and North Chicago Fire Department responded around 5:45 a.m. Tuesday to the area of Green Bay Road and Audrey Nixon Boulevard for a vehicle crash with injuries.
North Chicago Police Department Assistant Chief Gary Lunn said officers arrived and found a crash involving a bicyclist and a car.
The bicyclist, who was dressed in dark clothing, was attempting to cross Green Bay Road just south of the intersection, Lunn said.
The vehicle was traveling eastbound on Audrey Nixon Boulevard and made a right-hand turn onto southbound Green Bay Road.
Lunn said the vehicle struck the bicyclist after making the turn. Emergency crews arrived and found the victim down on the ground.
Paramedics transported the 62-year-old man to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment.
The driver pulled over, remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, Lunn said.
No impairment is suspected with the driver of the vehicle.
Green Bay Road was shut down for several hours after the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was activated to investigate the incident.
Lunn said that MCAT was called due to the injuries initially thought to be serious. The hospital later confirmed the victim was stabilized and is expected to survive.
No citations or charges have been issued as the crash remains under investigation by MCAT.
