Two residents were left homeless after a fire broke out in their house in Cary and firefighters experienced difficulty after encountering hoarder conditions, fire officials said.

The Cary Fire Protection District and Cary Police Department responded around 1:38 p.m. Saturday to the 400 block of Geneva Lane for a report of a structure fire.

A 911 caller, who was a neighbor, reported smoke was pouring out of the garage of a house.

Cary Fire Protection District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha said crews arrived to find a small fire in the garage with smoke extending into the residence.

Firefighters extinguished the fire in the attached garage and checked to see if it had extended into the home.

The fire was determined to be contained to the garage but there was smoke damage throughout the residence, Vucha said.

Crews encountered significant clutter and stored contents inside the home, which limited access and made search efforts more difficult, Vucha said.

Due to the conditions, along with the smoke damage, the home was considered uninhabitable until repairs and cleanup are completed.

Vucha said two adult male occupants who reside at the residence were left displaced.

No injuries were reported to any firefighters or residents and no animals were involved.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Cary Fire Protection District.
