A multiple-vehicle crash left one person hospitalized and a semi-tractor-trailer truck jackknifed, blocking multiple lanes on Interstate 94 near Deerfield that caused a major traffic backup.

The Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Protection District and Illinois State Police responded around 1:33 p.m. Thursday to Interstate 94 at the 25.25 mile marker in Deerfield for a vehicle crash with injuries.

Initial 911 callers reported possibly five vehicles involved in a crash, according to fire department radio traffic.

Fire crews arrived and reported finding multiple vehicles, possibly four in total, involved in the middle of the lanes of traffic.

The crash occurred just north of Lake Cook Road in the southbound lanes of Interstate 94.

One of the vehicles included a semi-tractor-trailer truck, which had jackknifed and was blocking four of the five lanes of traffic.

Traffic was only able to get by through the left shoulder and the far left lane.

Paramedics transported the female driver of the semi-truck to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The two other drivers involved declined transport to the hospital.

State police said it was later determined that three vehicles were involved, not four. Those included two passenger cars and the semi-truck.

A secondary crash involving a car that drove off the road occurred around 2:19 p.m. near the same location but no injuries were reported.

State police said multiple lanes of traffic were shut down until 3:20 p.m. when the crash scene was cleared. Traffic was heavily backed up past Route 22.

The driver of one of the passenger vehicles was cited with improper traffic lane usage for causing the crash.
