Police say they are investigating after a 17-year-old boy was found shot in the stomach outside an elementary school in Gurnee Friday evening.
The Gurnee Police Department and Gurnee Fire Department responded around 5:07 p.m. Friday to the area of River Trail School, 333 O’Plaine Road, for a report of a shooting.
Officers arrived and located a 17-year-old Gurnee boy who had suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen, according to Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor.
The teenager was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where he is receiving treatment.
Gaylor said it is believed the shooting occurred near the school in the area of Brookhaven Road and Wellington Circle.
A Lake County Sheriff’s Office canine unit was called to assist the Gurnee Police Department.
The canine conducted an area search as part of the initial investigation, Gaylor said.
Officers were seen speaking to at least four juveniles at Gillings Drive and Bluebird Court.
There was a heavy police presence including both officers and detectives at Gillings Drive and Brookhaven Road and at Brookhaven Road and Kensington Court, both of which are outside of River Trail School.
“At this time, there is no information to suggest an ongoing threat related to this incident,” Gaylor said.
Officers were continuing to maintain an increased presence in the area and at the school while the investigation remained active on Friday evening.
Gaylor said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
