Firefighters extricated an elderly woman who became trapped after a two-vehicle crash on Route 173 in Antioch that sent her and a second driver to the hospital Friday afternoon.

The Antioch Police Department and Antioch Fire Department responded around 4 p.m. Friday to the area of Route 173 and Deep Lake Road for a two-vehicle crash with injuries.

Emergency responders arrived and found a crash between a Toyota Solara coupe and a Kia SUV off the roadway in front of Culver’s, 451 Route 173.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage, and the driver of the Toyota – an elderly woman – was trapped, Antioch Battalion Fire Chief Joseph DuShane said.

Firefighters used hand tools to free the woman.

The driver of the Kia was not trapped but had chest pains, DuShane said.

Both drivers were transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

The westbound lanes of a portion of Route 173 were shut down while crews tended to the crash.

Antioch police officers were investigating the crash.

The roadway was reopened at around 4:35 p.m.
